Social Work Honor Society

In addition, the SWC affords a support system for students and an opportunity to address Departmental and University-wide concerns. Furthermore, the Social Work Club provides students with information relating to their field such as current information and literature on organizations, agencies, and other related areas. The exact goals and purposes of the Social Work Club for the current year are determined by the present year’s officers, class representatives, and the active members.

The activity level of these groups varies from year to year since their existence is dependent on students stepping forward and organizing meetings and events. Phi Alpha, an internationally-recognized organization, promotes humanitarian goals and ideals in the field of social work. Must be currently enrolled in the graduate social work program. Members of the Social Work Student Council have input on a variety of policies related to academics and student affairs. Student council members are selected each year by a committee of faculty members from the Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs.

The organization focuses on providing community service and providing professional and educational opportunities. SSWO is dedicated to promoting the educational and professional needs of social work students and exemplifying social work ethics and values. The organization is operated by students with support of the UNK Social Work Program and its faculty. Organizational membership is open to all students who wish to join their peers in an informal setting where they can implement the knowledge and skills they gained through social work education and benefit the community.

Through membership, students have the opportunity to learn more about the profession, get involved with humanitarian activities, and explore career choice for the future through networking with social workers in the community. Through engagement in the activities of the organization, students at the university benefit from diverse social connections, participation in teamwork, and the opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of the community. Along the way, the student strengthens the value of service, develops confidence as a leader, and enhances professional skills. Most college honor societies charge a one-time fee between $20 to $125 for lifetime membership.

The motto of Alpha Delta Mu Social Work Honor Society is “Advocate of the People”. The purpose of Alpha Delta Mu is to advance excellence in social work practice and to encourage, stimulate, and maintain scholarship of the individual members in all fields. Senior Social Work majors with a 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average are eligible to join Alpha Delta Mu Social Work Honor Society. Students may join the organization at any time during the year by contacting SWSA’s Recruitment Committee Chair or Treasurer.

The WCU chapter of Phi Alpha sets its own standards for eligibility in accordance with the criteria of the national organization. The Western Michigan University Master of Social Work Student Organization was established in 1969. Since then, the organization has dealt with the problems and issues that have confronted and affected social work students at Western Michigan University. The organization also acts as a liaison between students and faculty. The officers conduct the meetings, record the minutes, and represent student concerns. The meetings are open to all M.S.W. students and membership has no requirement other than being a student in the M.S.W. curriculum.
