Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers, and invites into membership those who have attained scholarship excellence in social work. Another great way to get involved in the school of social work is to serve on a committee! We wouldn’t be a school without our students, and we need your voice to make our school everything you hoped it would be. You’ll get to network with faculty and staff of the school and provide your feedback on our policies, structures, activities and curriculum. It’s a great leadership experience opportunity and it looks awesome on your resume. All school committees meet on Tuesday mornings for one to one and half hours on a monthly basis.
We have inducted eligible new Phi Alpha members every fall and spring semester since 2017. Nomination by the majority of the social work department faculty. Achieved an overall grade point average in the top 35% of social work majors. Michigan State, those three schools and a few other schools formed a National Honor Society Committee in November 1960. This committee worked on the constitution and other administrative matters. The name Phi Alpha was chosen since that was the name of the local chapter at Florida State University. The organization typically meets monthly during the school year and also participates in service projects, hosts guest speakers, and conducts occasional fundraisers. Phi Alpha Honor Society is dedicated to facilitating close bonds among students of social work and promoting humanitarian goals and ideas.
The Phi Alpha International Honor Society, with the motto “Through Knowledge – the challenge to serve”, is a national Social Work honor society. The purposes of Phi Alpha International Honor Society are to provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideals. Dr. Danielle Swick is the faculty advisor for our Phi Alpha chapter. To recognize those professional social workers whose service, contributions, and leadership are held in esteem. Dismissal from the Social Work program or College/University is cause for automatic recommendation for expulsion. Achieve a 3.25 grade point average in required social work courses. The officers of the organization shall consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer to be elected by a majority vote of the active chapter membership. Evidence of academic excellence, leadership ability, attitudes and behavior consistent with the values of social work, a high standard of personal behavior, and dedication to social work practice.
The formal organization and constitution were completed in 1962, and six chapters qualified to become “charter chapters.” National Phi Alpha membership dues include a onetime fee of $30 for each new chapter member. Scholarships are available, please inquire with faculty sponsor.
